NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 29, 2008 — Atlas Media Corp.’s Dr. G franchise is about to enjoy a very healthy fall season. Bruce David Klein, president and executive producer of Atlas Media Corp., today announced that the company has received a fourth season renewal from Discovery Health Channel and is in production on a special program that will air on the channel in celebration of the release of a new book based on the original series. Dr. G: Medical Examiner, which is the #1 rated program airing on Discovery Health Channel, will reach the 70-episode mark with the new, season four order in place.
The one-hour special HOW NOT TO DIE – A Dr. G Special is set to premiere on October 14 on Discovery Health Channel. During the special Dr. Jan Garavaglia counts down the top five killers in the United States and shares her insights on how to avoid them.
If there’s one thing she’s learned from performing over 6,000 autopsies, it’s that many of the people who have fallen prey to these killers did not need to die. In the special, she’ll reveal the five leading reasons that Americans end up in the morgue and share her wisdom on how to prevent ending up on her slab.
Dr. G delves into five of her most interesting cases, each exemplifying the five top killers. Case by case, she shares her wisdom on how simple, everyday choices can mean the difference between life and death, and counts down to reveal the number one cause of premature fatality.
Mr. Klein said, “Dr. G continues to be a signature series for Atlas Media and Discovery Health. Viewers across the country will now also have the opportunity to read about her amazing insights on how to cheat death by avoiding the clutches of the 5 deadliest killers of Americans.”
The same day (October 14), Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, will release the book, HOW NOT TO DIE: Surprising Lessons on Living Longer, Safer and Healthier from America’s Favorite Medical Examiner. Based on its originally-produced television series, Dr. G: Medical Examiner, and developed by Atlas Media in association with Crown Publishing and Dr. Garavaglia, the book will receive an initial release of 150,000 copies, which according to Mr. Klein dwarfs the typical 10,000-12,000 release of a new health-related book. The book further turns the table on the health category by using the popular fascination with forensic pathology to provide an enlightening new window on the everyday decisions we make that affect our longevity, safety and overall health.
Atlas Media owns the international television rights to both the complete series and the special. London based sales agent, ID Distribution (www.iddistribution.tv) handles international sales for Atlas. Additionally, the Atlas Digital + Emerging Media division is producing a Dr. G web site (www.hownottodie.com) that will embrace the spirit of the special along with additional features. The agreement with Crown Publishing’s Executive Editor, Heather Jackson was brokered by Stephen Hanselman, founder of LevelFiveMedia, on behalf of Atlas Media Corp. About Atlas Media Corp.
